The Assault on Nature

Over the past 50 years, humans have changed ecosystems more rapidly and extensively than in any comparable period of time in human history. The combination of rapid population growth and massively increased economic activity has left a harsh and continuing toll on the physical environment, in which humans are destroying natural habitats and the lush biodiversity within them. We have literally been laying waste to our planet, tearing down rainforests, polluting the air, damming rivers, depleating fish stocks, warming the atmosphere and covering everything with concrete and tarmac.

As our numbers grow (9 billion by 2050) the pressures on the planet and its life support systems (upon which all species depend, including ourselves) continue to mount year by year. We can no longer go on ignoring the warning signs that mother nature is raining down on us through its hurricanes, heatwaves and droughts. As we approach an irreversible tipping point, we must act now to preserve what is left of the natural environment on this planet and to move forward in a sustainable manner.
